Factor momentum via factor/style ETFs

momentum applied to factor portfolios rather than single stocks

expected Sharpe 0.5–0.9confidence: mediumfree daily data

Ehsani-Linnainmaa and follow-ups show factor returns are positively autocorrelated (unlike short-horizon stock returns), and factor momentum spans much of individual stock momentum. Implemented on liquid factor ETFs it is a low-turnover, cleanly backtestable cross-sectional momentum variant.

Why it's relevant now

2026's rotation is fundamentally a *factor* story (value, small-cap, low-vol leading growth) — timing which factor is winning is exactly what factor momentum does, and factor persistence is strongest at the 1-month horizon that this regime is exhibiting.

Universe

Style/factor ETFs — MTUM, VLUE, QUAL, USMV, SIZE, HDV, plus growth/value pair IVW/IVE and small/large IWM/IWB.

How it works

Rank each factor ETF on trailing 1–12 month return, hold the top 2–3 equal-weight, rebalance monthly (optionally include the 1-month lag that research flags as the key incremental signal).

Expected performance

Research-derived Sharpe estimate: 0.5–0.9. factor momentum reports competitive-to-superior Sharpe vs stock momentum).
